Leaving Casco Bay and headed east, you pass Halibut Rocks (a popular name for rock dangers in Maine) then the mouth of the Kennebec River before entering the mouth of the Sheepscot River. In previous summers, these were just features on the chart to the north as we headed up to Penobscot Bay, but this summer we decided to explore the Sheepscot.
We discovered several great places, and defining which was our favorite depends. Some were favorites because of hikes, some because of the people and culture, some because of the beauty of the anchorage itself.
Along the western shore of the Sheepscot, we spent a few days at Five Islands and a couple weeks in Robinhood Cove. At the very top of the river is the town of Wiscasset, which we fell in love with and spent a week or two. Coming back down the eastern side of the river we stopped for two or three days in a very cool anchorage known as Ovens Mouth, spent one night at Sawyer’s Island, then two or three nights at Love Cove before taking the shortcut over to Boothbay Harbor and Linekin Bay.
