Cycling the Katy Trail Reviews

Read what readers have to say about Cycling the Katy Trail

Review by Alan — 5.0 out of 5 stars–Great insight to riding the Katy Trail

I really like the way Neil wrote this as, really, two books. The Guide section was very helpful to me as I planned a week-long ride with friends on the Katy Trail. It had many helpful tips that allowed me to determine how far we wanted to ride each day, what towns satisfied that desire, and what to expect in those towns once we arrived. Of particular interest is the information about what services are available – such as water, food, and bike repair. The Journey section I liked best because it talked about the people they met and the dynamics of their relationship and how the Trail fit in to the process of learning how they reacted to different events and stimuli. The daily search for coffee was particularly entertaining. If you think you would like to do a bike tour (of any kind) this is a great book to provide a sense of what it can be like.

Review by Roadrider–5.0 out of 5 star–Another Cycling WINNER by Neil Hanson!

Like his previous books on cycling, Neil Hanson has brought all of us to another place on earth where two wheel motion is vivid, memorable and inspiring. “Cycling The Katy Trail” with his beloved Christine is in words what a cyclist hopes for. A clear path to fun, exploration and a search inside all of our souls to bring out the human nature of wanting to know more. Neil has a way of using his own life as a spring board to cycling and little by little, we feel like old friends. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Neil (I also owe him a few beers!). “Cycling The Katy Trail” makes me want to ride it myself, and I’m hoping Neil and Christine will come along. Make this book one of your own inspirations because Neil Hanson has done just that, inspire!

Reviewed by C Bell–5.0 out of 5 stars–A Bicyclist’s View of Small Town America

This book departs from the format of his earlier books of his cross-country bicycle journey, focusing on one trail only. The guide at the beginning seems to provide good information should I decide to attempt the Katy Trail and the story that follows makes me want to attempt it. While this book was not as full of the varied small life lessons as his other writings, the re-creation or recounting of his conversations ring true and are often thought-provoking. It is also a nice story of a couple getting to know each other on a new level. A quick entertaining read.

Review by Davebone — 5.0 out of 5 stars–Lovely read

I enjoy where my mind goes when I’m on a long ride, sometimes to quite unexpected places. The author very graciously shares many of his thoughts and opinions and since I’m around the same age I can certainly relate and feel his joy for that wonderful act of peddling down the road and allowing the mind as well as the body to experience new things. I heartily recommend this book!

Review by KCDoug–5.0 out of 5 stars–A Great Guide and Then Some

This book offers an excellent guide regarding infrastructure and amenities while bicycling the Katy Trail. But it also offers a glimpse into the culture of the small towns along the trail, and even some very good insight as to how and why our country has become so divided. It is also very well written. I heartily recommend it on all levels.

I’ve ridden the Katy Trail end-to-end 8 times and really enjoyed Neil’s take on the trail and the people around it. I liked many of his observations and would recommend the book to a Katy novice or experienced rider.
